Sports Man U coach Ferguson at ease despite English teams failure in Champions League
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson isn't worried with English teams under performing in the Champions League this year, and has termed their failures as just a blip. He also rejected the notion that the failures of English clubs in the Champions League are the start of long-term decline. With Chelsea and Arsenal suffering defeats against Napoli and AC Milan respectively over the past week in their last 16, first-leg ties in Italy, the Premier League could be without a representative in the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since the 1995-96 season should both clubs fail to qualify after next month's return fixtures. Despite United's demotion to the Europa League, Ferguson believes English teams are well set to bounce back and believes that sometime success in the Champions League comes in cycles. "Success in Europe can sometimes go in cycles. Spain had a great cycle about 10 years ago when Valencia, Deportivo la Coruna, Villarreal, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all dominant," The Telegraph quoted Ferguson, as saying. "We've had a great cycle in the Premier League for the eight years with teams getting to semi-finals and finals. I don't see that subsiding. I think the English teams will continue to be dominant," he said. "We've had a bad year this year, United have in particular but with Arsenal and Chelsea, disappointing results though they've had, both clubs have had injury problems and you cannot expect them to get the best results without their best teams," he added.
