Frenzied soccer fans spray colour and magic ahead of World Cup 2006 Kolkata | June 09, 2006 8:13:40 PM IST
Miles away from Germany, which is hosting the Soccer World Cup-2006, frenzied Indian fans used their talent to drum up the spirit of the raging sport in the nation. In Kolkata, a magic road show was organised to create rage and excitement in the air. Children wearing shirts of their favorite teams mobbed the artists as they showcased a puppet and magic show and fluttered colorful flags in the air. "World Cup is about to start and we are here to create awareness amongst locals. Here children are excited to watch the World Cup today on television. It's a rage amongst children," said Prabal Kumar, a puppeteer through his puppet. The 'city of joy' is all set to swing into action as the Soccer World Cup goes underway tonight. "World Cup is starting today. Today we are here to enjoy and support Brazil. This is the only reason we have organised such a show," said Sailen Ghosh, the organizer. In Bhubaneshwar, Orissa was colorfully painted as a football maniac set his brush into action. Pradosh Swain drew a 60 feet long painting on a wall in a local museum. He felt it was an innovative way to draw people's attention to the game of soccer. "I am an artist but I am a big fan of the football. I have shown the evolution of the football since ancient time. I have showcased it in a museum so that the busy people can be reminded that today the World Cup will start," said Pradosh Swain, the artist. In India, football is apparently the second in popularity after cricket. Munich is gearing up for the opening game of the 2006 FIFA World Cup game, when Germany plays Costa Rica on Friday evening.
