New Academy of Sciences site opens in S.F. San Francisco | September 29, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
Thousands of people have flocked to the grand opening of the new California Academy of Sciences site in San Francisco, a volunteer says. Academy volunteer Judy Ryan said she was excited by the big crowds for this weekend's science building debut in Golden Gate Park, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Sunday. I just love it when I watch the people's jaws drop, she said of those visiting the new facility Saturday. Academy attendance estimates for the free opening-day event were at nearly 17,000 with scores more of eager visitors unable to get inside. Site staff said those unable to visit the environmentally friendly venue should wait until Oct. 15, the next time it offers free admission to the public. The Chronicle said the glass-enclosed building features a tropical rain forest with crocodiles and birds, along with a fish-filled coral reef and the Morrison Planetarium. (UPI)
