NASA talks about lunar exploration Washington | September 25, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
The U.S. space agency has revealed initial plans for the Ares V heavy-lift rocket and Altair lunar lander. National Aeronautics and Space Administration managers held a three-hour briefing Thursday for industry representatives, members of academia and reporters. The Ares V and Altair are part of the next generation of a U.S. space transportation system designed to travel beyond low Earth orbit and return humans to the moon by 2020. The forum focused on the outcomes of a nine-month lunar transportation capabilities study that included conceptual designs for the rocket and lander and near-term business opportunities. NASA said it expects to issue a Request for Proposals for Altair and Ares V projects early during 2009 and announce the awards next spring. (UPI)
