Coronavirus causes 170 animal deaths New Orleans | August 07, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST
More than 170 animals were euthanized after an outbreak of canine coronavirus in a Louisiana animal shelter, officials said. The Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter in Hammond, La., was shut down by animal control officers to prevent spread of the disease in dogs and cats, WDSU-TV said Wednesday. It will take several days of intensive cleaning before the shelter, which takes in more than 5,000 homeless animals each year, will be allowed to reopen. Canine coronavirus can cause fever, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea, WDSU-TV said. (UPI)
