Fish caught at 7,500 feet
Paris | August 01, 2008 12:01:13 AM IST

French researchers said a deep-sea fish was caught at a record 7,500 feet beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean.

A report, published in the journal Deep-Sea Research, said the fish was captured at a hydrothermal vent along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, the BBC reported Thursday.

Pressurized recovery has been around for the past 30 years, but this is the deepest fish-capture under pressure, Bruce Shillito, marine biologist at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, France, told the BBC.

Shillito said researchers know very little about the deep-sea floor ecosystem.

We urgently need to find out more about the place we are destroying, he said.
