Jaiswal beats hasty retreat after remarks on Prez rule in UP
Lucknow | Thursday, Feb 23 2012 IST

Union coal minister Sriprakash Jaiswal had to beat a hasty retreat today within hours of his assertion that if Congress fails to form the government in Uttar Pradesh then President's rule is the only option. The Minister was forced to backtrack as the Election Commission said it was examining his statement, the Samajwadi Party said the Congress had conceded defeat and firebrand BJP leader Uma Bharti said Mr Jaiswal had extended a veiled threat to the UP voter. 'Congress will form the government in UP and if it fails then President's rule would be enforced,' Mr Jaiswal said to mediapersons outside the polling booth after casting his vote in Kanpur. He also pitched himself as a contender for the Chief Minister's post if the party captured power. Opposition leaders planned to lodge a formal complaint with the EC. SP national spokesman Ram Gopal Yadav said in Saifai (Etawah) that they will lodge a complaint against Mr Jaiswal. ''Congress is frustrated and now the leaders are just making controversial statements to violate the model code of conduct,'' he said while claiming that Congress could gain just five more seats than the 2007 results.
