Kochi | Monday, Jan 16 2012 IST

In the context of declining the export of spices from the country, the Spices Board in association with WTO cell of the Kerala Agriculture Department and WSO [World Spice Organisation] is organizing a one-day workshop here on January 20.

Spices farmers from various parts of Kerala, spices exporters, traders, scientists from Kerala Agriculture University, Indian Institute of Spices Research, Spices Board and Directorate of Coco Arecanut and Spices would take part in the workshop, a release said here today.

Stating that the global demand for spices had increased and the need to consolidate and maintain India s position as a world leader in this sector is gaining importance, it said that the joint venture opens a platform to discuss matters and chalk out action plans related to improvement and enhancement of production of better quality spices, specially black pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric and nutmeg.

Pointing out that spices play a major role in the total agricultural exports of the country and a substantial jump was observed in the past five years especially in the value of exports, it said that there was shortage in supplies especially the quantity that is available for exports and the industry was faced with the challenge of decline of quantity for exports mainly due to short supply and quality concerns.
