Agitation affects construction work, sale of cement
Srinagar | Thursday, Sep 9 2010 IST

Construction work in the Kashmir Valley is badly hit where sale of cement and other materials has gone down as lakhs of outside workers and labourers have left for their native places after they could not come out of their homes for work in view of strikes and curfew restrictions.

About 90 per cent workers and labourers from different states, including Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Punjab, and Nepal who were engaged in construction work, have left for their native places in view of the disturbance.

The construction work is badly affected, both in the private and the government sector.

Similar situation was witnessed during 2008 when massive protests rocked Kashmir and Jammu regions due to Amarnath land row.

Even barbers from Bihar have left for their homes after they could not open their shops because of the strike and curfew restrictions.

About four lakh outside workers and labourers arrive in the Valley in April every year. A good number of them were working in paddy fields and orchards, giving a tough competition to local people. Now in the absence of outsiders, local labourers and barbers were charging higher rates.

The road widening project from Nowpora to Hazratbal has also been affected due to the restrictions.

People were complaining shortage of cement and other construction material as movement of trucks was also paralysed during the past about three months.

All the four barber shops, owned by Bihar natives, in the Sonawar area remained closed as their owners had left the Valley due to lack of business.

Similar situation was being witnessed elsewhere in the Valley where outside workers and labourers were working in the construction sector, paddy fields and orchards.

Sale of local cement companies has also gone down.

Official sources said against the production of 38.066 metric tones (MTS) of cement during the first quarter of current financial year, only 35.309 MTS of cement was sold by the Jammu and Kashmir Cement Limited (JKCL).
