Spl Court adjourns masked calls case against RIL to Oct 18
Chennai | Wednesday, Sep 8 2010 IST

A Special Court trying CBI cases today adjourned to October 18, further hearing in the illegal masking of international calls case against six top executives of the erstwhile Reliance Infocomm Limited owned by Mukesh Ambani. When the case came up for hearing, the prosecution sought time to produce some documents pertaining to the case after which the Judge adjourned the case.

Counsels for the accused, including Manoj Modi, a very close associate of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh, were present in the court. After the split between the Ambani brothers, the company is now owned by Anil Ambani and has since been re-christened as Reliance Communications. Apart from Manoj Modi, others cited as accused were Akhil Gupta, Shankar Adawal, Pankaj Panwar, K R Raju and Bhagwan Das Khurana of the then Reliance Infocomm.

Mr Mukesh Ambani, however, was not cited as accused in the case registered by the CBI, which probed the case five years after the company had paid Rs 150 crore towards penalty imposed by Telecom Tribunal TDAST in 2006.

The charges against the company were that it had masked international calls as local calls to evade payment of fees, causing wrongful losses to the state exechequer. Some of the officials named in the charge sheet, filed early last month, were no longer employed with the telecom arm of the company.
