12-day remand for BJP MP's nephew in murder case
Ahmedabad | Wednesday, Sep 8 2010 IST

Shiva alias Pratap Solanki, nephew of BJP MP Dinu Bogha Solanki, arrested in connection with RTI activist Amit Jethwa's murder case, was today remanded to 12-day police custody by a Metropolitan Court. Shiva, who was absconding since the murder here on July 20 in front of the Gujarat High Court, was nabbed by sleuths of the city crime branch yesterday from Rajkot airport while he was trying to catch a Mumbai-bound flight.

Metropolitan Magistrate D S Trivedi granted 12-day remand, though the police sought 14 days remand stating that Shiva's police custody was needed to get answers of many questions. Shiva, who is Vice President of Kodinar municipality, looks after the transport and mining business of the BJP MP. Shiva is believed to have given 'supari' for killing Amit Jethwa, who has targeted the mining mafia near Gir sanctuary through PILs. Police said main accused Shailesh Pandya who pumped bullets from a country revolver on Jethva's body, is still at large and the police is expected to get some vital information through the interrogation of Shiva in the case.

Jethwa was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne assailants on the evening of July 20 near the Gujarat High Court when he was coming out after meeting his lawyer. Even though he was hit in the abdomen by the bullets, he tried to grapple with his assailants, who fled after leaving behind their motorcycle.

He had filed several petitions in the Gujarat High Court against the forest department and had also filed a public interest litigation (PIL) on the illegal mining in the Gir forests of Junagadh district which is considered the last abode of Asiatic lions in the world. Jethwa was also the president of Gir Nature Youth Club.
