Asha turns 77
Mumbai | Wednesday, Sep 8 2010 IST

Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle, who has lent her voice to more than 12,000 songs in over a dozen Indian and foreign languages, turned 77 today.

The versatile singer, whose career spans over five decades, remains a pillar of Indian music having sung songs from different genre like pop, ghazals, bhajans, traditional classical numbers, folk songs, qawwalis and Rabindra Sangeet. The evergreen singer, who loves to keep pace with changing times, joined microblogging site 'Twitter' a few months ago. She had sung a song with former Australian pacer Brett Lee.

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan was among the first to extend the birthday wishes. ''Asha ji, janm divas ki dher sari shubhkamanayein...Aap swasth rahen aur sukhi sampann rahen yahi ishwar se prarthana hai,'' (My best wishes on your birthday. May God keep you in good health and shower you with wealth and happiness),'' he said. Asha is celebrating her birthday in Singapore. Before leaving, she posted a message last night saying, ''Friends, brothers and sisters: once again thank you for your well wishes & b'day greetings. Talk to you soon from Singapore.'' Younger sister of another living legend Lata Mangeshkar, Asha has sung at least in 1,000 Hindi films. She also holds the distinction worldwide of one of the singers having sung in most languages. Her repertoire includes songs in Hindi Assamese, Urdu, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, English, Russian, Czech, Nepali, Malay and Malayalam. There are many popular numbers to her credit that remain unmatched despite myriad attempts to recreate, re-mix, re-spin her magic like 'Chura Liya Hai Tumne', 'Dum Maro Dum', 'In Ankhon Ki Masti' and 'Dil Cheez Kya Hai' among others.
