Rs 1 cr Punjab relief for Leh's flood victims

After delivering 11 truckloads of blankets, woollens, biscuits and dry fruits, Punjab government today announced a Rs one crore relief for victims of flash floods and mudslides in Leh in Jammu and Kashmir.

After handing over this first consignment of relief material to Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council chief executive councillor Chhering Dorje in Leh, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal pledged delivery of 15,000 bales of hay stock and 25,000 quintals of animal feed to save livestock in the devastated region.

The relief material delivered today was arranged by the Akali Party of which Mr Badal is the president. He said another 100 truckloads of relief material from different parts of the state was on way to Leh.

He announced a cash payment of Rs 5 lakh each from the party funds to two Sikh families whose shops were washed away by flash floods.

He said Punjab government has adopted a nine-year-old Leh girl and will bear the cost of her studies at Chandigarh.

Mr Badal gave a Rs 5 lakh cheque for repair of Pathar Sahib gurdwara where he paid obeisance, a Punjab government's press release said.
