Maoist surrenders, agrees to join mainstream
Midnapore | Thursday, Aug 26 2010 IST

In the first ever case of surrender of Maoists since the Bengal government's announcement of rehabilitation package, a hardcore red rebel today laid down arms to join the mainstream.

''Hardcore Maoist leader Shovan Karak alias Bijoy, a member of Sidhu-Kanu Gana Militia, has surrendered before the Midnapore Police Lines today,'' Superintendent of Police M K Verma said.

Karak hailed from Shayamsundarpur village under Goaltore police station.

According to the government's surrender policy, Bijoy would be given Rs 1.5 lakh in cash and Rs 2,000 per month for a period of 36 months during his rehabilitation period. He would also be imparted vocational training.

His case would be forwarded to the Surrender Committee for adopting suitable legal steps. The dreaded rebel was a Goaltore Maoist Action squad member operating from the region and has several murder cases to his name. Woman Maoist activist Shikha Mandi, who was slated to surrender today, withdrew for the time being as the media dubbed her as a 'police informer'.

''I request the media to be sensitive towards the cause and refrain from dubbing any Maoist, willing to surrender, as an activist,'' the SP added.

On August 9, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee had expressed her sympathies to the Maoist cause at a massive 'apolitical' rally organised at Lalgarh, a known rebel stronghold.

She had urged the ultras to shun violence and join the mainstream.

The Railway minister also took potshots at the ruling CPI(M) for playing 'gun politics' at the mass gathering graced by eminent social activists Swami Agnivesh and Medha Patekar.
