Blasting mobile towers by Maoists won't halt telecom expansion:Pilot
Bhubaneswar | Friday, Aug 20 2010 IST

The blowing up of mobile towers by Maoists was not a deterrent to the government to take up expansion of telecommunication network in Naxal-affected areas, Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Sachin Pilot said here today.

Talking to newspersons after launching the WiMax services in Orissa, Mr Pilot said BSNL would continue its expansion prograame in the Naxal-affected district to provide better communication facilities and help them to become a part of the information technology revolution.

He said more mobile towers would be built in the Naxal-hit areas.

When asked whether his ministry would raise a separate security battalion to protect the mobile towers in the affected areas, he said as it was not the job of the telecommunication department the state government should protect the towers and maintain law and order.

The Minister said the WiMax services would start functioning from 80 places in Orissa from tomorrow and would enable high speed wireless internet access in rural areas.

He said the wireless broadband project was launched to provide various facilities like the issue of birth, death certificates, acceptances of utility bills through the common services centres in rural areas.

The Minister said in Orissa the BSNL would set up 107 WiMax towers in the first phase and cover around 1500 Common Service Centres (CSCs).

BSNL plans to set up altogether 538 WiMax towers and cover around 5000 CSCs, Mr Pilot said.
