200 kg of Sea Cucumbers seized

Officials of Gulf of Mannar National Marine Park seized 200 kg of Sea Cucumbers, an endangered marine species, at Mandapam north seashore in the Island town of Rameswaram, here today. Official sources said during a routine patrol along the Rameswaram coast, the officials found nine gunny bags partly submerged in sea waters. All the bags were seized and during verification, the officials found sea cucumbers packed inside the gunny bags. The sea cucumbers were meant for smuggling to Sri Lanka. No one was arrested in this connection so far, the sources added. Sea Cucumbers are in great demand not only for delicacy but also for consuming in the belief that they have medicinal properties. Sea cucumbers fetch high price in the international market. Trading of Sea Cucumbers, listed in Schedule I of the Wildlife (Protection) Act 1972 was prohibited under international law and the poaching of these endangered marine species was banned in India and several foreign countries, the sources added. -- (UNI) -- 30MS19.xml
