Kapil unveils framework for reorienting teacher education
New Delhi | Friday, Mar 19 2010 IST

Union Minister for Human Resource Development Kapil Sibal today unveiled the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) aimed to improve the quality of teachers, who would be the most important for realising the objectives of the 'Right to Free and Compulsory Education Act' for Children. ''The NCF, 2005 places different demands and expectations on the teacher, which needs to be addressed both by initial and continuing teacher's education,'' Mr Sibal said at a press conference here.

'The National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education', developed by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), is an outcome of a major exercise undertaken by the NCTE towards improving the quality of teachers by incorporating a newer vision of school education and dovetailing the same into a vision for the teacher's education. The document deals with preparing and reorienting teachers for enabling the child to learn through various activities and exploration of his environment. The teaching methods are child-friendly and child-centred, informed by a perspective for equitable and sustainable development.

They take into account, gender perspectives, role of community knowledge in education and Information Communication and Technology (ICT) in schooling as well as e-learning.

The focus of this 'Framework' is towards professional and humane teacher who becomes a reflective practitioner of educational thought and practice. The 'Framework' has been evolved through a nationwide consultative and participatory process involving experts, teacher educators, teachers, researchers, educational administrators, material writers drawn from NCERT, Universities, colleges of education, DIETs and the State governments.
