Gehlot assures to consider demand of tax relief
Jaipur | Monday, Mar 15 2010 IST

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today assured that the government would seriously consider the demands and suggestions for some relief in tax proposals made in his Budget speech last week.

Replying to a four-day general debate on the Budget in the state assembly, Mr Gehlot said he would duly consider the demands and issues raised by the members from the Opposition as well the Treasury Benches and the representatives of different organisations.

The Chief Minister also indicated that announcement of relief might be made during his reply to debate on the Appropriation Bill or the Finance Bill later in the House.

Meanwhile, he announced that benefit of providing cheap wheat at rate of Rs 2 per kg to BPL families would also be extended to families of state BPL list.

Mr Gehlot also announced that the suggestions and demands for hike in honorarium and/or pension of former and sitting MLAs and Ministers would also be considered by the state government and a motion for the same might be made in the House at appropriate point of time.

Replying on a point to point basis, the issues raised by BJP Deputy Leader Ghanshyam Tiwari, BJP member Gulab Chand Kataria and other members during the debate, Mr Gehlot assured that his government would effectively defend the state's interests before the Centre and would secure its due share in all plans, projects and allocations.

He also assured that the government would also ensure that there was no wastage of public money and every penny from the public exchequer was spent for the welfare of the people.

He defended his government's approach and handling of the Gujjar agitation and the issue of reservation to the people of this section of society and sought the cooperation from all for waging legal battle for getting the Rajasthan Reservation Bill 2008 cleared from the court.

On the alleged breach of the privilege of the House in making a VAT related announcement outside the House, Mr Gehlot said neither it was a tax proposal nor was a bid to withdraw tax, it was a simple clarification aimed to remove confusion in the minds of trading community.

The Chief Minister said the decorum and dignity of the House would also be honoured and preserved.

Earlier, concluding the four-day debate--in which 85 members from different parties participated--BJP Deputy Leader Mr Tiwari alleged that the Chief Minister in his Budget speech had misled the people and the House on the Budget proposals and urged him to roll back from the proposed hike in VAT rate on oilseeds, readymade garments.

He said in his Budget speech Mr Gehlot had said the new tax proposals would fetch additional Rs 555 crore, but infact, his proposals were bound to put an additional burden of Rs 3,000 crore on tax payer people/traders.
