India DRDO to recruit NRI scientists
Union Defence minister A K Antony today said the Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and its cluster of life sciences laboratories have taken up aggressive efforts to promote recruitment of non-resident Indian scientists. Inaugurating the DRDO-Bharathiyar University (BU) centre for life Sciences Building constructed at a cost of Rs.18 crore here, he said the country should take special efforts to encourage scientists of Indian origin currently working abroad to return to the country to take care of National R & D laboratories, universities and other scientific institutions to support collaborative R&D programmes. This could convert the brain drain of the past into a brain gain for the future, he added. Lauding the DRDO research programmes, the Defence minister said the DRDO has developed specialized and customized products and technologies required for successful operations by defence forces on land, sea and air. He said life sciences laboratories were the only DRDO laboratories addressing the extremely critical issues of soldier health, performance enhancement particularly in extreme and hazardous environments, men-machine interface and life support system apart from products and other hardware deliverables. These institutions were doing yeomen services not only to the defence but also civil sector in myriad ways by providing food, health and energy security, training to services, acclimatization to extreme environments and other such intangible services, he added. -- (UNI) -- 02MS77.xml
