Govt clears deployment of 6 more Akash squadrons: Minister
Bangalore | Tuesday, Feb 2 2010 IST

The Indian Government had cleared establishment of six more squadrons of medium range surface-to-air Akash missiles, Defence Minister A K Antony said today.

Speaking after inaugurating Electronic Warfare and Avionics Strategic Business Unit Integration Facility at state-run Bharat Electronics Ltd here, he said this would help boost the security preparedness of the country.

''Establishment of six squadrons would cost Rs 4,000 crore. It includes radar deployment and missile deployment systems,'' he said.

The Minister said the decision to have six more Akash squadrons was cleared yesterday at the Defence Acquisition Council Meeting.

In a bid to modernise Armed Forces, it was also decided to replace existing T55 tanks with Main Battle Tank Arjun, he said.
