Bal Thackeray attacks Mukesh Ambani for his remarks
Mumbai | Friday, Jan 29 2010 IST

Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray today criticised Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani for his recent remark that Mumbai belongs to all Indians.

Mr Ambani had stated that the controversy over making Marathi mandatory for issuing taxi permits in Mumbai was 'unfortunate' and the metropolis belongs to all Indians.

''Marathi people have as much right over Mumbai as Mukesh has over Reliance group of companies. The only difference is that Mukesh's right is for business, whereas the right of Marathi people is for pride,'' Mr Thackeray wrote in an article in the party mouthpiece 'Saamna'.

''Mumbai is the capital of Maharashtra and will remain the capital of Maharashtra. Only Marathi people will have the first right on Mumbai,'' Thackeray said.

''Why did Pandit Mukesh Ambani leave out Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Jamnagar when he said Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi belong to all Indians?'' the Sena chief quipped. ''The Ambanis became business tycoons due to Mumbai and Maharashtra. Mukesh's father and my late friend Dhirubhai Ambani always acknowledged this. Then, why Mukesh has left the path treaded by his father?,'' Mr Thackeray asked.

''No one, whoever maybe the industrialist, should dare to stare at Mumbai and Marathi Manoos,'' he warned.
