Contraband Red Sanders wood worth about Rs one crore and rare 'Tubipora Musica' corals were recovered from one export and two import containers at CFS here and five people arrested in this regard, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) said here today. In the export container, the documents declared the goods as pebbles, but on examination, 10.72 MTs of Red Sanders wood valued at Rs 91,14,975 was found concealed with the layers of pebbles, according to a DRI release here. Red Sanders wood is prohibited item for export and is also covered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) list. The import consignment was found containing undeclared ORGAN PIPE CORAL weighing about 4.803 MTs. These corals, called as 'Tubipora Musica', found in shallow waters of Red Sea, West Pacific Sea and Africas East Coast, are also prohibited for import and trade in India under CITES. They were being imported under the guise of the declared 'Cypraea Annulus (Sea Shells)' which is free from trade restrictions. During the follow-up action, 25.810 Mt of more Red Sander wood was recovered from a godown at Delhi which was meant to be exported to Dubai, the statement said. Five persons, involved in the attempted illegal export of Red Sanders logs and illegal import of ORGAN PIPE CORAL have been arrested, it said.

The arrested include the godown owner Sanjeev Kumar Kashyap of Vishwas Nagar, Shahdara, Delhi, who has been arrested under Section 104 of the Customs Act, 1962. Investigations are in progress, DRI statement said.
