JD(U) concern over delay in prosecution of 1984 anti-sikh riot case
Patna | Tuesday, Dec 15 2009 IST

Senior JD(U) leader R R Kanaujia today expressed his concern over the fact that accused of anti-Sikh riot of 1984 following the assassination of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, were still moving freely.

Mr Kanaujia told mediapersons here that several accused of 1984 anti-Sikh riot case, including some high profile politicians, were moving scot-free despite commitment expressed by the Congress-led UPA government to ensure their conviction as soon as possible.

''It is satisfying to note that Union Home Minister P Chidambaram has assured the House that the Centre would take a decision in the current month itself on a request by the CBI seeking permission to start proceeding of prosecution of some high profile accused in the case, including senior Congress leader Jagdish Tytler,'' Mr Kanaujia said.

Required permission to prosecute the high profile politicians must be given to the competent authorities without further loss of time, he added.

Mr Kanaujia also urged the Centre to expedite the disposal of claims made by the victims of 1984 anti-sikh riot for adequate compensation. The delay in disposal of such cases was not only inhuman but eroding the credibility of the government as well, he maintained.
