Manhas, Bhatia steer Delhi to 344 for 4 against Maharashtra
New Delhi | Tuesday, Dec 8 2009 IST

Mithun Manhas struck an unbeaten century, while Rajat Bhatia (99) missed out on a well deserved hundred as Delhi ammased 344 for four in their first innings against Maharashtra on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy Super League Group B tie at the Roshanara stadium here today.

Manhas was still going strong on 166 when stumps were drawn, while Bhatia was dismissed just an over before the close of play when he edged a wide delivery from Samad Fallah to wicketkeeper Rohit Motwani.

Put in to bat first, Delhi was in a precarious positon at 88 for three when Bhatia joined Manhas and both batsmen showed great resistance to thwart the visiting bowling attack from making any further inroads.

In the absence of ex-captain Aakash Chopra, who opted out of the match due to fever, Delhi had a disastrous start as their top three batsmen including skipper Virat Kohli (4) were back in the hut by lunch.

But Manhas and Bhatia played with great maturity and added a marathon 256-run stand for the fourth wicket to keep the visitors at bay.

Manhas struck 19 bundaries in his flawless 248-ball knock while Bhatia hit 10 fours in his 180-ball stay at the wicket before he fell short of his century by just one run.

Earlier in the morning session, Jitender Patil gave the visitors an early breakthrough in the eighth over when opener Aditya Jain (14) nicked an away going delivery to Motwani. Kohli, who took 26 balls for his four runs, could not extend his stay much and was accounted for by Fallah.

Just at the stroke of lunch, Julka also departed when he was cleaned up by Kiran Ramling Adhav.
