Infant morality rate: A matter of concern for Madhya Pradesh
Bhopal | Tuesday, Dec 8 2009 IST

Expressing concern over the highest risk of death during infancy in Madhya Pradesh, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Programme Manager, Madhya Pradesh Office, Manish Mathur said the state government has the potential and also political will to cope with the situation but it needed a roadmap to achieve the goal.

''Although Madhya Pradesh government has taken to several measures to reduce infant mortality rate (IMR) and to tackle malnutrition, but still these are the matter of concern for the government and needs a roadmap in this regard,'' said Mr Mathur while addressing a seminar 'Development Priorities in Mahdya Pradesh: The Child Rights Perspective', jointly organised by Noronha Academy of Administration (NAA) and UNICEF here today.

Director, NAA, Muktesh Varshney said ''almost 60 per cent children have been estimated to under nourished and which appears to be the major contributing factor in the persistence of high to very high risk of death during infancy and during early childhood in Madhya Pradesh.'' Mr Varshney said the situation has been compounded by the prevailing level of poverty, illiteracy, specially among women in the reproductive age group, poor health infrastructure and inadequate safe drinking water. The situation has posed a major development challenge for the state, he said adding that existing plans would have to be translated into execution level.
