India Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitrak Yojna to be launched soon: Deora
Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora today said the 'Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitrak Yojna' scheme, which is aimed at substantially increasing the domestic cooking gas connections, will be launched soon. ''The Rajiv Gandhi Gramin LPG Vitrak Yojna is going to be launched very soon,'' Mr Deora said at the inauguration ceremony of Cairn India's Mangala oilfield here. At present, 10.57 crore connections cover about 50 per cent of the population. As per the scheme, it is proposed to increase the number of connections to 16 crore with a coverage of 75 per cent of population by 2015. The scheme is primarily aimed to reach LPG in villages, so that dependence on conventional fuels like wood and coal is reduced. ''This will not only help in conservation of forests, but also have positive impact on environment as well as on the health of our rural womenfolk,'' he said. Under the Yojana, LPG distributors would be appointed in rural areas with potential of 600 or more refills per month. Talking about the Mangala field, he said the Central government will get Rs 46,000 crore as its petroleum revenue over the life of the project, while the Rajasthan government would get Rs 12,000 crore as royalty revenue for the first five years of the project. The project will provide jobs to about 7,000-8,000 people, Mr Deora said. He said it is necessary that the impetus provided by discovery of new fields under New Exploration Licencing Policy (NELP), which provides level playing field to each player. The Minister said the total committed investment in NELP for exploration so far is about Rs 50,000 crore, out of which Rs 26,500 crore has already been made.
