India unlikely to meet 11th Plan power target
New Delhi | Saturday, Dec 5 2009 IST

With more than half period of the 11th five-year Plan over, India has been able to add less than 20,000 MW power to the national grid against the plan's target of 78,000 MW, a senior official said.

Speaking at a function, organised by an industry chamber here yesterday, Planning Commission member (Energy) B K Chaturvedi hoped another 35,000-40,000 MW would be added in the remaining plan period, which closes on March 31, 2012. This additional generation, he said, would be possible through public-private partnership.

He said the Commission has submitted a paper on power situation to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh but did not disclose shortfall figure. He said private sector's contribution in building power capacity has been more than satisfactory as they have exceeded their target by 200 per cent over the same period of the 10th plan. Power Trading Corporation Chief T N Thakur said PTC is contemplating an initial public offering (IPO) for its financial arm. Mr Sushil Maroo of Jindal Power wanted at least four meetings a year to tie up coal linkages for thermal plants operated by private players to ensure uninterrupted supply of coal instead of just one meeting as it is the practice now.
