'Peepli live', first Indian film selected for Sundance
Mumbai | Friday, Dec 4 2009 IST

'Peepli Live', a film about rural life in the country, by actor-filmmaker Aamir Khan, has become the first Indian movie to be selected in the competition section at the prestigeous Sundance Film Festival in the United States. The 2010 Sundance, one of largest Independent cinema festivals in the World, gets underway from January 21 to 31. A total of 112 feature films were selected, representing 39 countries by 43-first time directors. ''This is quite an achievement as Sundance is a festival, which is extremely selective about which film it accepts. I am so happy and proud of my writer-director Anusha Rizvi,'' Mr Khan wrote on his blog today. Incidentally, this is the same film that a section of the media has been erroneously reporting as being about farmer suicides. Its not about farmer suicides, he clarified. Peepli Live, is a satire, a black comedy about rural life in India. Except for Raghuvir Yadav, most of the actors were facing the camera for the first time and many of them were of Adivasi origin from Madhya Pradesh. ''And what performances! I have been acting for 20 years and there was so much that I learnt from watching them'', he remarked. ''I havent spoken about the film before as I like to be sure about how the film has turned out before I speak about it. Am rather happy with the way the film has turned out. Am looking forward to see what kind of response it gets at Sundance'', he said.
