India CPI(M) demands all-party meeting on drought in Rajasthan
The Rajasthan unit of CPI(M) today urged Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot to convene an all-party meeting for discussing the drought situation in the state and drawing a strategy to effectively provide relief to the people in the affected areas. Talking to reporters here, party state unit in-charge and former MP Hannan Mollah and state secretary Prof Vasudev Acharya said around 35,000 villages spread-over 26 districts, were reeling under drought condition. Even fodder was being sold at Rs 8 per Kg, they observed. Of these, over 22,000 villages were facing severe drinking water crisis and the state government was required to take immediate and effective measures to address the situation, they said. The Marxist leaders said they did not doubt the intentions of the Chief Minister but his government has so far failed to show any initiative with regard to the drought. Mr Mollah said the state government should press up on its demand to seek adequate relief funds from the Centre and for the purpose an all-party delegation must be sent. He was in the town to participate in the three-day meeting of the party state council which had decided to launch an agitation to highlight people's issues, including the price rise, drought releif and corruption in the implementation of works under NREGA.
