Man arrested, 9 stolen cars recovered

The Governorpet police today arrested a man in the presence of mediators at Rajiv Gandhi Park here and recovered nine cars, worth Rs 21.50 lakh from him.

Informing this at a press conference this evening, City Assistant Commissioner of Police (West Zone) P Prakash Rao said the accused Pothuraju Nagaraju, running Magna Finance Company, and who used to give two wheelers on finance took away a Tata Indica car of one Chalamal Venkata Reddy on November 21.

Mr Rao said in his complaint to the police yesterday, Reddy stated that when he was at Gandhinagar area along with his car, the accused approached him and talked about contract for hire of his car to IOC. Later, when Reddy parked the car and left for some work along with his friend, the accused took away the car and fled from the scene, the ACP said.

Acting on complainant report, a case had been registered and during the course of investigation, the accused was arrested, he added.

During interrogation, the accused confessed that he had stolen 8 more cars like Tata Indica, Tata Indica DLS, Chevrolet Tavera and Opel Astra and later mortgaged them to persons known to him at Mangalagiri in neighbouring Guntur District.

As per the confessional statement of the accused, the stolen cars were recovered from the receivers, Mr Rao said, adding the owners of the stolen cars have to be traced out.

The accused had the habit on taking the cars on hire on monthly basis as he knew several people due to running the finance business. He will be sent to judicial custody, Mr Rao added.
