Marathi film withstood onslaught of Bollywood in Mumbai:Palekar
Panaji | Monday, Nov 30 2009 IST

Noted film director Amol Palekar says Marathi film has withstood the ''onslaught'' of Bollywood from the heartland of Mumbai and carved a niche for itself like the other regional language films of Bengal and Malayalam.

Interacting with media persons in connection with the premier of his English film ''And Once Again'' on the sidelines of the ongoing 40th edition of the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) here today, Mr Palekar said the Marathi film industry bore the brunt of the Bollywood Masala films and struggled hard to surive the onslaught at last surmounting all the problems.

''There are at least ten young Marathi film makers now with a wide range of subjects, content and techniques to the credit of the Marathi film industry which India could boast of,'' Mr Palekar said.

He was searching for some good locale in Goa for a film he had in mind for which the script was readied by writer Sandhya.

Referring to the english film, he said, the government of Sikkim and all its agencies, besides the monasteries, particularly Borong, extended full cooperation for shooting the film which became a big success in the IFFI. It would be released soon.

The film was about the story of a civil servant who lost his wife in a mishap but meets her later in a monastery in Sikkim to his surprise.

To another question, he said, he never came forward with films with the intention of either acting in his own films or for getting into festival circuits like the IFFI, but with the sole aim of reaching the masses without any masala. He, however, admitted he had acted in the film Samanthar.

Sharing platform with the cast of his film including Rituparna Sen, Rajat and script writer Sandhya, Mr Palekar said he was highly priviliged to have roped in the ''experienced and accomplished actors and technicians'' who contributed to the success of his films.

He recalled how an actress, defying the doctor's advice for undergoing surgery for appendicites, continued to act till completiion of her schedule in the film in Sikkim only to undergo surgery later in Mumbai. ''We had developed a bond of relationship, happy and highly satisfying, even beyond the film shooting, with the amazing cooperation he had received from the team,'' he added.
