British engineers want India to treat climate change as war
New Delhi | Sunday, Nov 29 2009 IST

A week before the United Nations Climate Change conference in Copenhagen, a professional engineers' society of Britain has stressed that India must immediately adopt ''wartime measures'' to meet the challenges of global climate change. ''It would be very difficult for most of the countries including the UK and India to meet ambitious climate change targets and cut greenhouse gases by about 20-25 per cent in stipulated time without drastic action. The only way to reach the target would be to going to war against carbon emissions,'' Mr Keith Millard, President, Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) said, delivering a lecture on 'Managing To Improve the World Through Engineering' yesterday. Emphasising on the high cost of transition for a low carbon economy, he stated, ''Individuals will have to adopt more sustainable lifestyles and reduce the amount of energy used in homes and switching to public transport rather than driving cars.'' He also said personal carbon allowances that limit the amount of energy used on transport, cooling, heating and flying will also have to be introduced. After the Copenhagen meet, demand for chemical, civil and mechanical engineers will be on the rise world over to meet the ambitious targets, he added.
