Indias earth scientists get together at Aizawl
Aizawl | Thursday, Nov 26 2009 IST

The countrys earth scientists will get together here on the occasion of a three-day seminar on 'geodynamics, sedimentation and biotic response in the context of India-Asia collision from today.

An Annual General Meeting of Geological Society of India, the largest gathering of earth scientists in the country, will be concurrent to the seminar organised by Mizoram Universitys Department of Geology.

Dr Victor Z Ralte, member of the organising committee, said yesterday the three-day seminar is unique as nearly 135 eminent scientists from across the country are expected to attend it. ''These scientists will be representing nearly 45 organisations, including research institutes, IITs and Universities from twenty states,'' he said.

The seminar is mainly sponsored by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, New Delhi, Department of Science & Technology, New Delhi, Oil India Limited (OIL), North Eastern Council (NEC), Oil & Natural Gas Commission (ONGC), Council of Scientific & Industrial Research and Mizoram University.

The seminar will have nine technical sessions in which 135 research papers will be presented.

''Geodynamic evolution of the Himalayas and the Indo-Myanmar range, seismicity and GPS geodesy, neotectonics and geohazards and geoenergy resources (oil & gas and atomic minerals) will be the highlights of the seminar,'' the official said. The deliberations in the seminar will culminate in the recommendations of a better understanding of the processes and products of the India-Asia collision and in containing the disastrous effects of the natural hazards. It aims to explore the potential of the economic resources concealed in the Cenozoic rock successions, specially of the Northeastern region, officials said.

''The seminar is important in the context of the renewed efforts for exploring oil and gas resources in Mizoram and the recent increase in the seismicity in the Himalayan region including the Indo-Myanmar range,'' the officials added.
