Centre to raise 3 billion USD loan from World Bank: Kamalnath

The centre will raise a loan of 3 billion dollars from the World Bank, to upgrade about 7000 km of National Highways from one-lane to two-lane, Union minister for Roads and Highways Kamal Nath announced here today.

Speaking after inaugurating the 5th edition of the Excon-09, the International Exhibition of the Construction Equipment here, he said his ministry had submitted a proposal to the World Bank on the issue.

He said World Bank President Robert Zoellick would visit New Delhi soon and discuss issue of extending the loan. ''The ministry has a proposal to upgrade about 7000 KM of National Highways from one lane to 2 lane taking into consideration of the demand'' he said.

He said his ministry also had a proposal to constitute the National Express Highway Authority of India (NEHAI) separating from the National Highways Authority (NHAI) for which process was already set in motion.

He said the legislation to constitute NEHAI would be tabled in the Parliament for its nod and about 17000 km of length would be brought under the proposed NEHAI.
