Pawar to consult southern parties on sugarcane issue
New Delhi | Wednesday, Nov 25 2009 IST

Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar today assured the political parties that he would hold discussions with the groupings from the south for finding a way out to help the sugarcane farmers. An assurance to this effect was given to all the political parties which had attended a meeting convened by him. There was virtual north-south divide on the issue of abolishing section 5A of the Sugar Control Order which provides for the sugar mills paying higher support price for the cane to the growers. The parties in north are apprehensive that the sugar mills had never offered over and above the Statutory Minimum Price prescribed by the Government, BJP spokesperson Sushma Swaraj told reporters.

The Government has agreed not to proceed with the proposed Sugar Control Order that prevented the States from fixing a higher price for the sugar cane to be supplied to sugar mills in their respective states without taking the burden on the exchequer. The political parties have assured to support the Government to come out with a Bill to overcome the order of the Supreme Court as the treasury could not afford to bear the burden of Rs 14,000 crore to be paid to the sugar mills.
