145 police,61 Maoist, killed in 100 encounters in Orissa
Bhubaneswar | Monday, Nov 23 2009 IST

At least 145 police personnel, 61 Maoists and 97 common men were killed in about 100 encounters during last nine years in Orissa, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik told the state Assembly today.

As many as 118 Police personnel were killed, 87 others injured, in attack launched by the Left wing extremists during the last five years itself, Mr Patnaik said while replying to a question of Congress member Santosh Singh Saluja.

Replying to another question of Mr Amar Prasad Satpathy, the Chief Minister said as many as 85 common people were killed by the Maoists during last five years in the state.

During the period the police have seized 972 guns, 202 bombs, ammunitions and explosive materials from the Maoists, he said.

No where in the state police personnel have either surrendered before the Maoists or fled from the scene out of fear, the chief minister said but admitted that in some place Maoists might have forced the police personnel to surrender or to leave the police stations.

The Chief Minister said since many reasons were linked with the Maoists problem, no time limit could be fixed for its solution but efforts were on to resolve the issue at the earliest.
