RS adjourned for day over Liberhan report leak
New Delhi | Monday, Nov 23 2009 IST

The alleged leakage of the Liberhan Commission Report on Babri Masjid demolition rocked the Rajya Sabha today with the Opposition's uproar over the issue forcing adjournment of the House for the day.

Immediately after the House resumed proceedings at 1400 hrs, after three adjournments earlier on the issue, the Members of the main Opposition BJP were up on their feet demanding immediate tabling of the Liberhan Commission Report.

Deputy Chairman K Rahman Khan's statement that Home Minister P Chidambaram had already made a statement on the issue and the Government would table the report in Parliament soon failed to pacify the Opposition Members like Prakash Javadekar, who trooped into the well of the House and raised slogans - ''Pesh karo, pesh karo, Sadan mein report pesh karo (table the report in Parliament).'' Deputy Leader of the Opposition SS Ahluwalia asked, ''Where did the press got the report from?'' and BJP Member Venkaiah Naidu said, ''I request the Government to understand the gravity of the situation. The press has a copy but Parliament does not have it. Do you expect us to keep quiet?'' Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan said the Government had already assured the Opposition Members that the report will be tabled in Parliament.

But this assurance did not appease the Opposition Members who continued to raise slogans. BJP Member Prakash Javadekar said, ''Make a statement as to whether the report findings published in the daily are true or false.'' To this, the Deputy Chairman said, ''The Government will not give a statement according to your want.'' The Opposition's uproar did not allow the proceedings to continue which forced the Deputy Chairman to adjourn the House for the day.

Earlier in the day, Mr Chidambaram described the leakage of the ''purported'' Liberhan Commission Report as unfortunate and strongly denied involvement of any Ministry official in the leakage.

''There is only one copy of the Liberhan Commission Report which is with the Home Ministry and the Ministry has not spoken to any journalist,'' Mr Chidambaram said, making a statement in the House over the issue. He, however, pointed out that the Government had already said the Report along with the Action Taken Report would be tabled in the House in the current session.

The House was earlier adjourned twice, first till 1200 hrs and later till 1400 hrs over the issue.
