Naveen govt fails to provide package to distressed farmers: JMM
Baripada | Sunday, Nov 22 2009 IST

Jharkhand Mukti Morcha's (JMM) Orissa unit has slammed the Naveen Patnaik government for its ''failure'' to announce a special package for distressed farmers to recover from the shock of their crippled economy resulting from crop loss and pushing them to follow the paths of suicides.

The JMM state unit, which held an emergency meeting here yesterday, said the ruling BJD government, headed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, had failed to provide suitable relief to the farmers in the forms of ''debt waiver schemes'', exemption of water and electricity taxes, support prices for the farm products and a well-knit and strong rabi crop programme during the past nine years rule.

The JMM meeting has decided to ''Gherao'' the state Assembly on December 2 next and stage demonstration as a mark of protest against the anti-people and anti-farmer policies of the ruling BJD government.

JMM General Secretary Prakash Chandra Soren said thousands of JMM activists from all over the state would throng the state capital on December 2 to participate in the protest rally and gherao the Orissa Assembly.

Mr Soren told newspersons here that the failures of the Naveen Patnaik government had pushed the distressed, helpless and frustrated farmers to commit suicide.

The ruling BJD, he further said, had lost its credibility to continue in power and should step down immediately.

''The anti-people BJD government also did not bother to accept a move to mourn the deaths of the farmers in the state Assembly and observe two minutes' silence for the deceased farmers,'' JMM state core committee President Bhadhav Chandra Hansda said.

Besides the death of 33 farmers all over the state, the BJD government was also responsible for the multi-crore mining scam, sky-rocketing prices of essential commodities, deteriorating law and order situation in the state, he said.
