Foreigners' Dectection Tribunal a complete failure: APW

The Foreigners Detection Tribunals active in the state to detect and deport foreigners and illegal migrants from Assam has been a complete failure, Assam Public Works (APW), an NGO active in generating public opinion against insurgency and foreigners issue, alleged here today. ''The tribunals entrusted with the responsibility of detecting and deporting foreigners from the state cannot resolve the illegal migration problem from Bangladesh,'' APW president Abhijit Sharma said. The foreigners tribunals were formed as per provisions of the historic Assam Accord of 1985, which entrusted absolute powers with the tribunals for determining if a person was illegally staying in the state. At present, there are 32 such tribunals and four more will be set up soon. Mr Sharma pointed that mere 5160 foreigners have been detected by such tribunals till date against the alleged lakhs of illegal Bangladeshis staying in the state. He added that names of the detected foreigners were also not cancelled from the electoral roll. The APW had prepared and submitted a model for detection of all illegal people living in the state within six-eight months time and the model will be announced soon, Mr Sharma said.
