Army jawan among 3 killed in Poonch encounter

An army jawan was among two militants killed in a fierce gun battle as security forces foiled an infiltration bid from across the border in Balakote Sector of Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir today.

''An army jawan identified Sudhir Kumar of 7 Raj Rifles was killed, two others were injured while two militants were also gunned down by the troops in an encounter triggered after infiltration bid was foiled in Balakote Sector this evening,'' official sources told UNI here.

''A group of militants opened fire at Trikundi forward post in Datote Nallah of Balakote Sector last evening at around 1900 hrs to infiltrate into the Indian Territory,'' sources said adding that the fire was retaliated and the militants were pushed back.

''Yet another attempt was made this evening following which an encounter started in which the jawan was killed, they said.

''The operation is in progress while searches operation has been intensified in the area,'' the sources said.
