New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Injured drag-flicker Sandeep Singh has been ruled out of the Champions Challenge I hockey tournament starting form December 6-13, in Argentina.

Sandeep, who is suffering from an acute lumbar strain, has been advised rest for at least three weeks. He will be replaced by Diwakar Ram in the 21-member Indian squad.

''Sandeep Singh has been medically ruled out for the FIH Men's Champions Challenge I Hockey Tournament,'' Hockey India said in a statement.

''As per the medical report of Orthopaedic Surgeon Dr Parag Sancheti, he is suffering from acute lumbar strain with right L5 radculopathy. He has to undergo rehabilitation programme for a period of three weeks and has been advised not to do any strenuous activity which might aggravate his pain,'' it added.

Highly placed sources within the team said Rajpal Singh will lead India in the eight-nation tournament. ''Rajpal has been named captain for the tournament,'' sources said. ''The decision to give Rajpal the captaincy was taken at the team's dinner meeting tonight.''
