Insurgeny under control in Manipur: Maj Gen Choudhary
Imphal | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

IGAR(S) Major General A K Choudhary today said insurgency was under control in Manipur and the militants could not freely operate in the state.

Addressing the media at Mantripukhri, Mr Choudhary said although extortion, attack on soft targets were continuing, the militant's menace had been contained to such an exent that they could not operate openly as they used to do earlier. ''Insurgency needs to be addressed at the ground level by working closely with the people. A commando unit of the Assam Rifles, on the lines of the NSG, will be opened soon. The unit, already approved by the government, will perform specialised task in the region,'' he added.

Talks were also going on with Kuki militants that helped in minimising problems, he said adding agreements were already signed and designated camps were also under construction. ''It is likely that truce could be reached with the Manipur-based militant outfit,'' he further said.

The militants, who were under Suspension of Operation (SOO), were now under the control of the government and their activities had been checked, according to him.

''Killing someone in a fake encounter is against the ethos of the jawans. The primary aim is not to kill. He negated the reports that people had been regularly picked by Assam Rifles personnel and killed later in fake encounters,'' he explained.
