Revoke life ban against Azharuddin, Congress MPs urge BCCI
New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

A group of Congress MPs from Uttar Pradesh today met International Cricket Council (ICC) Vice-President Sharad Pawar and asked him to use his influence with the BCCI to revoke the life ban on former captain Mohammad Azharuddin.

Azharuddin, who is now a Congress MP from Moradabad in UP, is serving a life ban from the BCCI for his involvement in the match-fixing scandal in 2000.

Another former cricketer Ajay Sharma was also handed a life ban while Ajay Jadeja and Manoj Prabhakar were given five-year bans by the BCCI.

The indian cricket board had blacklisted Azharuddin through a unanimous resolution nine years ago. But Congress leaders argue that the ban on the former captain should be lifted now because several other players, who faced similar charges, have been allowed back into the game. The MPs include Jitin Prasad, BCCI's Finance committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla and actor-turned-politician Raj Babbar.

BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla said the ban on Azharuddin can be lifted if the AGM deems it fit.

''I spoke to BCCI President Shashank Manohar, and he said that if Azhar himself shows interest in wanting the ban to be lifted then it can be moved forward to the Annual General Meeting and then the AGM will have to decide,'' Shukla said.

Azaharuddin played 99 Tests and scored 6215 runs at an average of 45. He played a whopping 334 one-dayers, accumulating 9378 runs at an average of 36.92.
