Dam safe, seepage below permissible limits: TN tells Centre
Chennai | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

The Tamil Nadu government today informed the Centre that the Mullaiperiyar dam was stable and in safe condition, and the seepage alleged by Kerala government was well below the permissible limits.

After Kerala alleged seepage in the dam, the Tamil Nadu government deputed a team of Chief Engineers and Engineers of the Dam Safety Directorate on November 17 and 20 to inspect the dam and assess the ground realities.

In a letter to Secretary, Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India, Tamil Nadu Public Works Department Secretary S Ramasundaram said the team had extensively inspected the dam, the galleries, downstream of the dam and the spillways.

He said the team reported to the state government that the seepage was 58.46 litres per minute, when the water level in the dam was 135.10 ft. ''This quantity of seepage is well below the permissible limits of seepage'', he said.

The team also found that the bitumen provided in the construction joints in the blocks 17 and 18 had slightly come out due to weathering over the years, he said, adding this would be repaired under regular maintenance and there will not be any wetting/dampness in the dam thereafter. Moreover, the dampness occured only due to the recent local rains.

He said the team had concluded that the main dam, the baby dam and the surplus arrangements in the Mullaperiyar dam were all functioning well. ''To sum up, the Mullaperiyar dam is stable and in safe condition, according to this team of senior engineers of the Government of Tamil Nadu'', he said in the letter.

The above facts were brought to the attention of the Centre in view of the seepage alleged by the government of Kerala as seen from media reports, he said.
