MDMK to work for AIADMK win in bypolls:Vaiko
Chennai | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Marumalarchi DMK (MDMK) General Secretary Vaiko today said the party would work for the victory of AIADMK in the December 19 By-elections to Vandavasi and Tiruchendur Assembly Constituencies in Tamil Nadu.

In a brief talk with newspersons after appearing before a Magistrate Court here, Mr Vaiko welcomed the AIADMK's decision to contest the Bye-elections and pledged his support.

He said AIADMK Supremo J Jayalalithaa held consultations with him a couple of days ago when he called on her about the party's decision to contest the Bye-election. The AIADMK leader had taken him into confidence before taking a decision to contest the elections,he claimed.

When the AIADMK boycotted the Bye-elections to five Assembly constituencies is August, alleging elections would not be free and fair, the MDMK too fell in line with the party.

Mr Vaiko appeared before a Magistrate Court here to receive a copy of the charge sheet filed against him in connection with his alleged ''anti-national'' remarks while speaking on ''What is happening in Eelam?'' on October 21 last year.

Police arrested both Mr Vaiko and the then MDMK Treasurer M Kannappan on charges of sedition, but named Mr Vaiko alone while filing the charge sheet as Mr Kannappan, in the meantime, quit the party and joined the ruling DMK.

Mr Kannappan, while addressing the meet, had warned people of Tamil Nadu would be forced to demand separate Tamil Nadu if Eelam was not given to the Lankan Tamils. Mr Vaiko endorsed his sentiments.

''This is a clear case of political vendetta,'' Mr Vaiko said adding the government had not charge sheeted Mr Kannappan, because he joined the DMK.
