Swamy warns of stir against renaming Madurai airport
Chennai | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy today said his party would launch an agitation along with other friendly parties like BJP, if the Tamil Nadu government does not withdraw its letter opposing the Union Civil Aviation Ministry's proposal to rename Madurai international airport after Muthuramalinga Thevar.

Talking to newspersons here, he said Mr Panneerselvam, when he was acting Chief Minister in the erstwhile AIADMK government, had written to the then civil aviation minister Sharad Yadav opposing the move.

''I have spoken to civil aviation minister Praful Patel recently. He has confirmed that the day the Tamil Nadu government withdraws the letter of Panneerselvam, the Madurai airport would be renamed after Muthuramalinga Thevar'', Dr Swamy claimed.

He said if Chief Minister M Karunanidhi does not withdraw the letter by January 14, next year, the Janata Party would launch a state-wide agitation demanding immediate withdrawal of that letter. ''We will mobilise the support of BJP, RSS, VHP and Thevar bhakthargal for the agitation by holding a rally in Madurai'', he said.
