Rallies, Black Flag dmos, mourning, mark 'Fishermen Day'
Chennai | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Fishermen across Tamil Nadu today observed ''Fishermen Day'' as Black Day and took out rallies protesting against the frequent attacks on them by the Sri lankan Navy and to press their charter of demands, which included scrapping of the proposed Management and Regulation Bill.

Instead of celebrating on the joyous occasion, the fishing community in the coastal districts of the state observed it as a ''mourning day'' by hoisting black flags and refrained from venturing into the sea for fishing.

More than 300 fishermen representing various associations took out a vehicle rally from suburban Panayur, a fishing hamlet on the ECR, to the city condemning the atrocities of Sri Lankan Navy.

The rally was led by Tamil Nadu Fishermen Federation President Anbazhaganar. Later, a delegation of fishermen, met Fisheries Minister K P P Samy at the State Secretariat and submitted a memorandum highlighting their demands, which included scrapping of the proposed Marine Fisheries (Management and Regulation) Bill, 2009, to be tabled in the ongoing winter session of Parliament.

The Bill was aimed at imposing restrictions on fishing on the high seas, a section of fishermen, who staged a protest demonstration before the Chennai Collectorate in the city to condemn the Centre's move, said.
