India Mystery shrouds death of elephant in zoo
A five-year-old female pachyderm was found dead under mysterious circumstances at the Vandalur Zoo, near here, early this morning. Zoo sources said the staff found the pachyderm lifeless in its enclosure this morning. The post-mortem was performed this morning and the carcass buried, they said. Zoo Director C L Ananthaswamy confirmed the death of the pachyderm called 'Chellame.' However, he said that he did not know the cause of death as he had been on leave for the last 20 days. Conflicting reports only added to the element of mystery. While the Zoo Staff said Chellame was healthy and could have died in a fight with other elephants (the Zoo house five elephants, including four females) or snake bite, Mr Kalyanamurthy, the in-charge, said the pachyderm had not been keeping well as it was suffering from diarrhoea. -- (UNI) -- 21MS21.xml
