National Mortality rate comes down to 72 per 1000 lives in India
Bangalore | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

The national mortality rate in India has come down to 72 per 1000 lives in 2007 as against 117 in 1990, UNICEF Chief Field Officer Michel Saint Lot said today.

Speaking after releasing a special edition issue of UNICEFs flagship 'The State of the World's Children' report, here he said in Karnataka the mortality rate has come down to 54.7 in 2007 from 87 in 1990.

He said more chidren now had access to improved drinking water and the percentage has increased to 88 per cent in 2005-06, against 62 per cent in 1992-93 and the girls attendence rate in primary school has also increased to 81 per cent from 61 per cent during the period.

''However, many challengers remain for still realising child rights especially with reference to salt iodisation, reduction in strangted Infant Mortality Rate and Maternal Mortality Rate figures and sanitation access and usage. The rights of girls too require special attention in terms of ensuring implementation at the ground level ,'' Mr Lot added.

Stating that it was the collective responsibility of all to ensure that every child's rights to survival, development, protection and participation are truely implemented, Mr Lot said ''the big challenge of the next 20 years is to firmly position the best interests of children at the heart of all human activity.'' Karnataka Minister for Women and Child Development Narender Swamy in his address said the decline in sex ratio has been causing great concern in the state. However, with the state government coming out with new welfare schemes including Bhagyalakshmi under which the government deposits Rs 10,000 in the name of every girl child born, has started creating awareness among the public.

He said the mortality rate in the state has come down to 42 per 1000 lives as against all India figure of 57. ''Our target is to achieve 30 by 2010 under State Plan of Action launched,'' he added.
