New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

An employee of a businessman was today shot dead while another received injuries when two unidentified motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at them in the busy Azadpur fruit market in Adarsh Nagar area of north-west district. The incident was reported today morning at about 1030 hrs near the traffic signal of the market when two motorcycle-borne assailants opened fire at two employees of a fruit and vegetables businessman, a senior police officer said.

According to the police, the assailants wanted to rob the employees thinking they were carrying money in their bag but could rob only ledgers.

Bakre Alam (40) and Ravinder (47), the accountants, were on their way to their office in Azadpur market on their scooter. When they stopped at a traffic signal they were fired upon by the two accused.

Alam died on the spot while Ravider suffered bullet injuries on chest. The assailants fled with the bag containing ledgers, said a senior police officer. Ravinder and Alam were rushed to Max Hospital at Pitampura where Alam was declared brought dead while Ravinder is in the intensive care unit and his condition was stated to be critical by the doctors. This broad daylight incident angered the traders and local residents who took to streets and blocked the main road for hours.

Angry mob pelted stones at police team and vandalised some buses.

Police detained some people who were pelting stones at them.

A search has been launched to nab the criminals and a case has been registered in this regard with Adarsh Nagar police station.
